Peter the Hermit
- Popular preacher of the First Crusade (q.v.), who led a multitude of poor people and petty knights to Constantinople (q.v.) in 1096. Alexios I Komnenos (qq.v.) helped transport them to Asia Minor (q.v.), where they were ambushed and defeated by Kilij Arslan I near Nicaea (qq.v.) on 21 October 1096. Peter's failure left an unfavorable impression of the crusader movement on Byzantium (q.v.), and the Seljuks of Asia Minor (qq.v.) expected further easy victories over subsequent crusader forces. In the Alexiad of Anna Komnene (q.v.) there is an unflattering portrait of Peter and his followers, who are rightly condemned for their lack of discipline.
